    The answer is 288.

Back to 7th grade Math: Order of operations= PEMDAS
    Parentheses first 9+3=12
Then division 48/2=24 because 24X2 is 48. Multiplication and division go together.
Then multiplication because they are next to each other. 24(12)=288

DailyTech previously reported that according to IBM, yields on the Cell processors were extremely poor, and that most Cell processors would ship without all eight cores working. According to IBM, some PlayStation 3 units will have 7-core Cell processors and some with 8-core Cell processors.

what a difference using Intel chips have made. Who would have predicted that they would actually be shipping chips ahead of their own road map after the whole PowerPC painful journey.

Sophos does not seem to display these characteristics. That I've noticed.

True, but just recently for example AVG Free Edition literally killed tons of Windows 7 machines due to an buggy update which caused W7 to reboot into an endless loop. The AVG team got hit by an outcry from angry and desperate users in their forum. I dont want things like that happen to my mac, i bought one to not have to bother about those issues.

What Microsoft has doesn't transfer to the tablet market. Ok, they have cash. They have enough money to give away 80 million tablets. If they do that, over the next three years, the cash is gone, and Apple + Android will still sell more units :D

Distribution channel? What distribution channel does Microsoft have for hardware? They don't. Zune was a failure. XBox and tablets are two completely different markets.

The developers are writing iPhone / iPad apps.

And how would Microsoft go about "leveraging the desktop"? People throw out computers and buy an iPad. People don't say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy a Microsoft tablet to go with it". They say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy an iPad so I can get rid of that old PC".

    >Ok, they have cash.
They have enough buy RIM, Motorola, and HTC if they really wanted to.

    > Distribution channel?
MS has probably one of the widest distribution channels on the consumer and enterprise markets...BTW, Im not saying they should make MS hardware, just the OS. They have contacts with almost ALL the manufacturers and resellers. One thing I learned was never to underestimate Microsoft. (I agree that their hardware products are mostly failures)

    > The developers are writing iPhone / iPad apps.
I agree... that's why they have to leverage their existing developer communities.

    > And how would Microsoft go about "leveraging the desktop"? People throw out computers and buy an iPad. People don't say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy a Microsoft tablet to go with it". They say "well, I have a Windows PC, I will buy an iPad so I can get rid of that old PC"

Not true. People go with what they know - and Apple/Google are quickly setting the new OS standard for tablets; But do not ignore that's LOTs of people that are familiar with Windows (over 1 billion window users. Are they going to throw that away or find a way to leverage?).

Yet they will stay in line for two days to pay premium for it.
Apple has one great thing.... a lot of quarter-brain organisms that pump $$ to their pocket.

You are so right. I'm thrilled with Apple's brainwashed minions, and even happier that I began loading up on Apple stock over a decade ago.

Little did I realize they would bring us shareholders so much wealth. To think that I bought a load of shares when it was under $20 per, then kept adding each year since, brings a huge grin.

At this point everything I buy is nearly free. And when they screw up the masses still buy it. Nothing could be sweeter.

Well Cydia is like being a virgin then having sex with a whore then getting STDs that constantly slow down your OS. It might be good in the short term, but you'll have to work hard to keep the swelling down with various lotions and creams. But unlike STDs, you can revert to a clean version of the OS anytime you want. :P

And apple has nothing to do with iOS slow downs? What happens when you run iOS 4 on your iphone 3g? Cydia isnt the only culprit of that (if it is at all). Plus the benefits are long term. See my previous post about examples of what you can do with your phone if its jailbroken.

Plus i would venture that most people would rather have sex throughout their lives and deal with the risk of an occasional STD than to be a lifelong virgin. Take a look at the human race for evidence.

The only things comin out are the Video Rental service, and a size increase for the Nano.

    Move along.

I have to disagree. What makes you think Apple is going to go with only a video rental service? Apple is all about wanting their users being able to "own" content, not borrow it. If anything, they'll go the route of Amazon and allow the user to choose to either own or rent it.

And size increase for the iPod nano sounds very likely, but I expect Apple to do something with the 5G iPod also. Whether it's increase storage capacities or a true fullscreen model, anything works for me.

Currently I can create a DVD from the developer preview of Lion. The installation program is provided as a DMG file, so it is relatively easy to create the DVD. Of course an average user wouldn't find the whole thing that easy, so I suppose Apple will provide some other solution. The option to buy the DVD will of course be available.

Can you boot off the stuff in the DMG?

Thank you for making my point for me. Last time I checked you were the one making predictions that Lion was going to be handled in the store exactly like every other app.

All I am saying is that there is no proof to point either way at the moment. But coming to a conclusion that Lion is going to be handled like every other app is like concluding that the iPhone SDK, when released, was going to be exactly like "web apps" were previously.

i "predict" the next car i buy will have four wheels.

i don't "predict" that Lion will be handled the same as every other App Store product, but there's reason to believe it will be, and that's a cause for concern.

please stop putting words in my mouth.

While I agree in a sense, it's commonly known that there's no way to plug every hole, so you're scooping out water from a sinking ship with a cup. Every iOS device has been jailbroken since release, many several times using several exploits. There will never be a day when a software company will be smarter than the hacking community... software companies can't afford to buy them all :-)

That's very true. But Apple (or any software, consumer electronics company) would be foolish to not close known security holes.

Yes, new holes will be found. And Apple will try to plug those up, as well. I can't see an argument for people complaining that Apple is patching security holes.

hence the ambiguity, IMO, of the presentation of the equation.

    Ambiguity would be something like

    what does 48 2 9 3 equal?

A mathematical expression such as the one addressed here is not ambiguous unless people draw inferences from it which are not present. Just because people can incorrectly draw information does not make something inherently ambiguous.

It would be ambiguous if there were two right answers from the given information. In this case, there is not, there is only one answer which makes sense mathematically from the equation.

I believe there a an entirely new iMac in the works. The current design can't handle the heat Conroe will want to throw at it. And the Kentsfield 4-core processor will want even better cooling. Currently the iMac looks like it has a G5 inside. Apple doesn't like their Macs to look the same over too long a time.

I disagree with you on this. I agree with you on the MBP. Apple just revved the specs of their displays and they also released the education iMac. I think the iMac is a homerun for Apple on the desktop. Obviously the strongest Apple product right now is the MacBook. But while I think you're right on with the MBP, I think they will find a way to update the iMac for new, faster processors while retaining the current design/enclosure. Even if it has Merom inside. After all they could rev it to Merom 2.1 and 2.3 and some nice new features and I don't think many people will complain. (Alright some will complain, they always do, but that's beside the point).

I would bet Conroe is the single processor option for Mac Pros to fill out the mid-range desktop line. The Mac Pro starts at $2,499 and that's way too expensive. I'm thinking there's going to be something to fill the gap between $1,499 and $2,499. That's where Conroe comes in.

It seems to me that things have gone wildly off topic. The story was "Motorola Xoom Tablet Sales: Approximately 100,000 Units So Far?" not "Android vs. Apple: Which One Sucks More?"

We should be discussing the validity of the numbers and why this is the case, and not strictly "mine is longer than yours and here's why." Save those rants for a comparison of the devices story.

LOL! Unfortunately, this seems to go with the territory. Mention Android and it's bound to start a battle. Just like mention AT&T or Verizon and the flames start flying. It's silly, but fun to watch the banter.

100,000 or even 200,000 units is not good news for Moto. If sales don't increase quickly, retailers will loose interest and focus on what sells - the iPad.

So, how is MacShrine perceived in the rumor community? Do they have a sufficiently good track record for us to say, "this is it - the Merom MBP is finally coming", or is this likely to be just another rehash of all the Core2Duo MBP hype/frustration going around?

Reliable or not, I guess this is a good news for many of us waiting for the C2D MBP. If it proved reliable, I think MacRumors should pay more attention to check their updates in the future. ;)

I was about to think of that as "another crappy site?" but then I thought, hey, everyone have their own sources that you could never imagine, like one of the posts right before Sept 12th event claiming to know the entire agenda, and he's pretty accurate, no?

If ARM is indeed able to make high-performance CPUs, then a move like this would be one of the most significant ones in the computing history. Let's face it: the x86 architecture is a dead end. Its needlessly complicated and builds on obsolete tech. Internally, the modern x86 CPUs aren't even x86 anymore - they decompose, recompile and reorder the machine code as they execute it. The ARM assembly is more suited for modern computing as it is more efficient as the x86 code and allows better CPU pipeline utilization.

The real question is whether ARM is able to create a CPU which is powerful enough to compete with Intel's offerings. The x86 may be inefficient but the sophisticated design of Intel CPUs results in great performance. ARM must really step on it to attain these levels.

P.S. If something like this should happen, I am sure that ARM will include hardware emulation layer for x86 instructions, for compatibility with older software. Any anyway, what does it cost to recompile an application? Indeed: nothing (if the application is competently written, that is).

What are the uses for this MobileMe? Why would I use / need it?

I have used Macs since they came into existence, and I have owned several of them the past 20 years. But I have not used either dotMac or MobileMe.

    Only serious replies, please.

If you have multiple Macs/iPhones Mobileme is wonderful for keeping things in sync. Not just contacts, calendars and bookmarks but everything from system prefers to dock items and keychains.

It's easy to locate your iPod Touch/iPhone or iPad with the "Find my device" feature and you have backup and remote access features as well.

Then of course you have the web space (integration is easy with iWeb) and photo galleries.

The primary detractors of MobileMe boil down to a few common groups.

    1. Free - They don't want to pay
    2. Limited scope - MobileMe only interests them in a few areas
    3. Wedded to another service - Dropbox, Gmail/Google etc
    4. Negative - "MobileMe sucks because my mail was slow one day"

In a nutshell of course. Everyone's opinion is valid for them but for me personally I find mobile me worth the $6 a month I pay (real world pricing from Amazon.com)

For me it's simple..skip a latte a couple of times or avoid fast food one day out the month and MobileMe is paid for.

Very true but those Macs are portables, not iMacs and certainly not the overpriced and overpowered Xeon server driven Mac Pro's that replaced the affordable and (at the time) upgradeable G4's and G5's we all used for our work. What happened to the dedicated 20/23/30" LCD CCFL Apple Cinema Display line, or even the Apple Studio Display line before them? Replaced with ONE 27" LED LCD based off the 27" iMac (basically an iMac without a computer). Times change, I get it, but why do they have to leave us power users who supported them before the iPod and need Apple systems for work behind? It's costing us thousands to switch to Windows systems and applications such as Avid and Premiere Pro/Adobe Suites.

IDevices are amazing, but please, don't make the already dwindling prosumers systems become iOS systems for the average Joe. There are a lot of people on here that are new comers from Apple's iPod/iPhone influx that don't know/understand what this is doing to those who really need OS X and affordable mid-towers and top notch displays again and once built in California, now "designed" in California. Man, sad times for us and the states on that change...

They sold well over 1 million desktops/workstation units last quarter and will surpass that quite handily this quarter.

People who think they know Apple's long term strategy as iOS only know nothing of Apple.

They need to allow for updates via App Store that don't require full redownload of the software before they can make it exclusive. Especially in today's age of capping home internet usage (biggest croc ever conceived), smaller updates need to be possible. Perfect example: XCode.

so I was looking around the apple store this afternoon till I noticed something :D

When selecting the MBP in the apple store you'll get some info below...
There's this one title where it shows front row... it says "It's showtime" :)

maybe it's a hint from apple  the MBP is the onle one where it says "it's showtime". the rest all say something else like "put on a show"...

ah well I'm just going crazy from waiting for the new MBP's...

I dunno, i dont think buying an iPhone is feasible for at least another year. For me at least, just not excited about it at all. First of, it'll be the first ever Apple phone meaning there will be some niggles, also it'll be a candy bar. The only candy bar phone i can tolerate is a smart phone. Some thing tells me the iPhone WONT be a smartphone from the ground up. It'll be a phone with *some* smart phone abilities.

Also, like most recent rumored products from Apple, its probably been waaay overhyped and will end up being a dissapointment.

Palm shouldn't be so confident though. Apple is the same company that made Michael Dell eat his words.

People shouldn't discount palm yet either.

The most sensible thing i've heard so far...
