Hilarious to all those people who jumped on the THUNDERBOLT bandwagon. No thunderbolt devices yet and they have the hideous old case design.

Like that Alienware you've been eying has a prettier design. Where are you going to find a better design?

Great, I've been hungering for a new Macbook Pro for quite some time, and was hoping I could hold out long enough to get a non-ugly model :)

I can't stand the UB look.

Again, I challenge you to find a better looking, better designed laptop chassis on the market.

    Thinner, no optical...perhaps SSD only?

I'd prefer a smaller bezel the same color as the MBA. Say, 1/4" or a little smaller? Larger trackpad for more gestures?

It's called the MacBook Air. Go buy one now. Meanwhile us MacBook Pro customers will be happy actually having features.

There is your answer, people think it should be thinner

It's true. And they are the rare few that want only a MacBook Air with a larger screen and a discrete GPU. Good thing those people are in the minority.

Nice. My 17 MBP (Early 2009) will be getting close to the end of its life cycle by then, allowing me to easily slide into a new MBP.

End of its life-cycle? Is there an app you can't run on that thing? Or are you one of those people on here that can't be out of date? An Early 2009 17" MacBook Pro wasn't something to shake a stick at last I checked. Through true, it is older than a week.

    Wow, you people...

    +1

Let me clarify, i made my decision before this news was posted here. I really dont see nothing wrong with waiting on this refresh especially if it will be a huge step forward(which i believe it will be).

The "step forward" of which you speak, of which is the basis of this article, is only in regards to the exterior design, nothing else. Sure if they improve upon the durability and the ease of servicing, that'll be a decent step forward, otherwise, we're talking about cosmetics, and again while most of the people who lurk these forums care about form over function, function is all that matters and it won't be that different next rev, redesign or not.

They already have that product...it's called the MacBook Air.

    This.

Translated: Next macbook pro will be a macbook air. MBA will cease to exist as a discrete product line. Happening late fall 2011 (if we're lucky).

You have a very bass-ackwards definition of luck.

I think it's almost a given that they'll do away with the superdrive. There's no need for it. And if they move to flash storage, they could make it a bit thinner and lighter. It would be like a Macbook air, but with powerful mobile processors.

Right, because I get high-speed internet everywhere! Because my MacBook Pro has 4G (and because 4G, itself, is ubiquitous). Because with a "MacBook Pro", I enjoy the inconvenience of having to have an external optical drive (because after all, the MacBook PRO line is all about conservation of space). Most people with the anti-superdrive arguments don't realize how very selfish and ridiculous their stances are. Luckily for them, there's an app for that, namely the MacBook Air.

This, if it and Ivy Bridge, lower SSD prices/larger capacities come to fruition solidify my decision to stay with my 2010 and wait for the 2012 refresh.

Your computer is only one year old; at that point it'll only be two, maybe two and a half years old. Will you REALLY NEED a new computer at that point?

please get rid of the bezel. make it as small as possible.

please do not make it thinner. rather reduce footprint and keep battery life up.

Laptop design doesn't work that way. They won't make it thicker and if they reduced the footprint, they'd reduce the size (and therefore capacity) of the battery. Nice idea though.

SSD + HD - Optical Drive = Sold

SSD + HD - Optical Drive =! MacBook Pro

    Sorry.

Or just get a USB optical drive and have the best of both worlds ... you won't be forced to lug around something you only use once in a while :)

If the ODD is integrated, I'm not forced to lug around an extra part when I need to use it. Or is your definition of inconvenience backwards?

Ehrrrm, a superdrive is what invariably fails first and gives your laptop almost an extra kilogram of weight you need to carry around. Because taking it off means losing warranty.

A superdrive is not a trait of a "Pro" laptop. The speed and reliability are. Imagine a RAID array of SSDs packed together in a package the size of a superdrive. Imagine a pico projector in that slot this is what Toshiba is going to do real soon now.

A Kilogram? Have you ever held a bare slot-load drive before? They're barely suitable for paperweights. I'll grant you that the slot-load models Apple uses are disgustingly failure proned, but the solution is to design a better one, not throw the bloody baby out with the bath water. A Pro laptop is like a swiss-army knife, equipped with any tool ANY professional could possibly need. Hence why the "MacBook Pro" of any Apple laptop should have the optical drive. Again, if you absolutely can't have one, the MacBook Air is a decent alternative.

The optical drive doesn't make it "Pro" it makes it "outdated" and "unnecessary." If you need an optical drive by an external one, there is no need to hold up the majority that never use them.

Contrastingly, if you need to not have one, you can always buy a MacBook Air. I don't use my FireWire 800 port often, but when I do, I'm thankful it's there. The same goes for the optical drive. Again, if you don't want it, Apple makes the MacBook Air which comes without it for the truly space-concious.

Yes, they should just just shut-up and vote for corporate-sponsored Republicrats or Converalabour every four or five years and take it.

It's a shame that there is no longer any meaningful democracy.
Yes, and that certainly justifies being a loudmouthed asshat. There are ways you can get a message out without being a douchebag, but that's rapidly becoming a lost art on any part of the political spectrum.

Anyway, I'd be pretty pissed off if a bunch of Greenpeace guys were screwing with my baby kid without even talking to me about it. I don't care if it's as inconspicuous as them putting an apple in the pram and snapping publicity photos. They had damn well better get permission before doing it.

After a bit of thought I think I'm siding with Apple... here's why:

The strongest argument I've read against the trademark is that 'App Store' is describing the very thing it actually is. Someone likened this to renaming 'Windows' to 'Operating System'.

However what isn't appreciated is that 'App' is in itself an abbreviation. It's debatable whether apple popularised it or not but thats not the point. Basically it would be like renaming 'Windows' to 'Ope System'.

I'd argue that 'Ope System' could be trademarked whereas 'Operating System' couldn't...Disagree because "Ope System" is not the accepted abbreviation: "OS" is. Do you think Microsoft should be able to rename Windows OS and then trademark OS? Of course not, and accordingly Apple shouldn't get a trademark on App Store.

Apple should lose this dispute on the merits. Whether they do or not will depend on the caliber of their lawyers. On the two briefs we've seen so far, Apple clearly has some advantage, so they might pull this out nonetheless.

Something that has been mentioned a few times here and there that I would like clarifying. I will be purchasing (as part of a group order) an MPB this Saturday. When I go to the apple website, for glossy, it says 5-7 days. If I ordered the MBP, and somehow managed to hold onto it without tearing it open until the 25th, could I really send it in, unopened, for an updated MBP not questions asked?

As long as it's not a BTO, you should be able to return the MBP within the 14 day grace period. There is a restocking fee, but several people have stated that if you ask nicely (maybe bake some cookies for them?) they'll waive the restocking fee.

BTO systems cannot be returned unless they're DOA.

I'm amazed that no-one is seeing the very dangerous path we could be heading down here. Will people only see it when it's too late?

Are we looking into the jaws of the future where you pay, but never OWN anything? Music, Movies, Apps.

You pay to have the right to listen/watch/use the data.

The data is never downloaded to your device to do as you wish, it's always held by the owners. or distributors.

I can see this coming like a flashing red warning sign.

You're being alarmist. Besides what does it matter to you if you "own" a copy of a song, just as long as the overall cost of use is the same or less? Competition will always moderate costs. I suggest you get more sleep and relax.

It is amazing just how many times this same stupid comment has been made in this thread. Why do people have to regurgitate the same thing over and over?

Why is is sad a criminal dies while firing at a guard. Why is it sad a person who knows the consequences of carrying a weapon while attempting to rob a store? You play with fire and get burned. Nothing sad about it.

Kudos for the guard for protecting himself. He can sleep at night knowing he is not instead DEAD.

I'm with you. I don't understand these people that think there is NEVER any justification to take someone's life. This mentality is why the pirates off the coast of Somalia continue to harass and shoot up cargo ships. God forbid that the US crushes these vermin with superior fire-power. No, they are humans, and we are so enlightened, so let them shoot at us, take people hostage for years, and steal our ships and cargo. We are powerless to an gang of violent thugs because of our "moral superiority". More like a mental disorder to me.

New iMacs and Mac Minis imo. Those don't require anything changed apart from a processor swap since they're socketed. I'd give the Macbook Pros and MacBooks a while longer before we see an update.

Edit: If they don't up the quality of the movies to the base HD spec of 720p then they may as well not bother. I'd rather go and buy the DVDs. The only way I'd be tempted to purchase via iTunes would be if the quality I could get would be higher. I don't care if it takes a while to download.

I think this 'reliable confirmation' is about the Macbook's, not the Macbook Pro's. The Macbook redesign wasn't very future-proof and is similar to the older ones, and the MBP unibody is pretty much age-less and hasn't been out for very long. So...unibody/carbon fibre Macbook's seems more likely to me, rather than another MBP redesign.

As long as it doesnt shudder with the OS X animations and it plays 1080p smoothly, why does it matter? Do people really game on an Air?

Because people are stupid, that's why.

No one realistically games on a Macbook Air. And the SNB IGP is actually very capable. Their GMA offerings have generally always been crap but the 3000 is quite the opposite.

That said, the main use for the Air is as an ultraportable. And the improved battery life and lowered heat output are major advantages for an ultraportable that only a moron would ignore.

Do you guys see Thunderbolt replacing maybe the firewire ports one day?

No - ThunderPort will be too expensive. And USB 3.0 will destroy the last bits of firewire that USB 2.0 didn't kill.

My guess is that the most popular ThunderPort peripheral will be a small hub with four port-multiplier capable eSATA ports and six USB 3.0 ports.

At the high end, there will be ThunderPort RAID devices and professional A/D gear - but ThunderPort disks will be too expensive for the common folks.

I think we all are getting caught up in the "core" crazy a little too much. I understand at a professional level the more cores the better. But Apple has delivered this target market its machine, the Mac Pro. I think the Mac Pro will see even more options in its configurations as time goes on, but I don't see them putting the next biggest and best chip in every product. After all, 90% of home computer users are using thier computers for basic functions and not heavy video or audio work, which means they don't need 4 cores. Apple is focusing on the digital lifestyle and this means they want to sell a customer hardware that will take care of this emerging market, like live streaming video rentals to their large screened LCD TV. I think the Mac Pro is the ever-expanding machine but look for huge price differences in its configs. An $800 difference in 2.66 to 3.0 GHz Xeon? All we do know is that Apple wants to rule the digital livingroom and probably is not concerned with bragging rights. But the obvious is true, there are some big steps ahead in processing power.

My question is, will the movies have subtitles/captioning. As a hearing impaired user, that's the deal breaker for me. If they do have captioning, I can see myself purchasing a few movies once in a while (Though I'd still rather have DVDs most of the time). If not, no way.

Ok. So it's lack of compromise that some are keen to avoid.

Understandable. That's if the next MBA has the 3000HD in it of course. Who's knows what cooking in Apple' R&D dungeon.

I just know from being a nerd myself, how much some can get hung up on such technical points.

It's just that core group of people seem to want a MBA to able to gene sequence the complete human genome before lunchtime before they'll buy one.

I on the other hand would like it to be very portable and do the stuff I do on my 3 yr old iMac, surf, email, BBC iPlayer some light video editing and photo storage. Won't be getting one for at least 6 months anyway so maybe open CL will be on a Intel graphics chip by then.

Someone needs to bookmark this thread so we can come back to it in 2015. If there's a new CEO (or group of CEO's) for Apple and Nokia/MS have a brilliant partnership, I don't see where the humor is. Four years is a hell of a long time for a new OS to mature.
